The History of G-SHOCK’s “Triple 10”

G-SHOCK was developed under the concept of the “Triple 10.” This refers to the goal of achieving three key standards: 10-bar water resistance, shock resistance capable of withstanding a 10-meter drop, and a 10-year battery life.

The very first model to embody this concept was the DW-5000C, which featured 20-bar water resistance, shock resistance that met the standards set by ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards) for maintaining performance under the impact of a free fall from 1 meter, and a battery life of 7 years.

At that time, in the traditional watch industry, diver’s watches were still regarded as professional tools for specialists, while ordinary wristwatches were widely considered to be delicate precision instruments vulnerable to water and shock. G-SHOCK overturned that common perception by establishing the concept of a highly durable and rugged wristwatch.
