Meticulously crafted limited-edition timepiece with engraved bezel featuring a phoenix in flight, an enduring icon of resilience and good fortune

Image photo of MRG-B2000KT and tsuba

The limited-edition MRG-B2000KT draws inspiration from the kurogane-tsuba iron guard of the Japanese katana commissioned specially for MR-G. This very special timepiece captures the strength and beauty of the Japanese sword, expressing the dedication of the MR-G line to tradition and innovation through craftsmanship that celebrates the beauty in form and color of Japanese aesthetics.

Handcrafted by metalsmith KOBAYASHI Masao, the bezel is engraved with a design of a phoenix, a symbol of good fortune, expressing both the beauty of artisanship and the strong, noble spirit of the samurai warrior embodied by the sword. This bold, exquisite engraving captures the dynamic form of a phoenix in flight, its head depicted on the left and tail on the right of the bezel, in bas-relief using a traditional carving technique called shishiai-bori. Each individual bezel is a one-of-a-kind, hand-engraved by a master craftsman. The dark blue-green kurogane-iro (literally “iron color”) hue that iron takes on when heated is achieved with a green DLC coating applied to titanium materials that have undergone a deep-layer hardening process.
The gradated color of the dial ring evokes the beauty of the graceful flutter of the phoenix. Details throughout the design — the dial’s arrow fletching pattern representing evil spirits repelled by a straight-flying arrow hitting its target, the shape of the indexes that evoke the curvature of the sword, and more — all highlight the traditional Japanese aesthetics of the MR-G line.

Embracing the vision of master craftspeople dedicated to traditional Japanese craftsmanship, this very special MR-G captures the katana spirit in a meeting of the worlds of artisanship and timepieces. Available in a limited edition of only 800 pieces worldwide.

The commanding presence of kurogane-iro, the dynamic energy of the phoenix

The specially commissioned bezel engraved with a phoenix design is crafted by metalsmith KOBAYASHI Masao, who also engraved the kurogane-tsuba iron guard of the MR-G katana. Evoking the iron guard of a Japanese sword, the bezel engraving incorporates a bold composition that depicts the phoenix’s head and tail separately on its left and right sides. Lines in bas-relief are created using the shishiai-bori technique. This depth, dimension, and bold composition make the auspicious phoenix in flight come to life, a majestic design further accentuated by the unique rock-grain relief pattern around the perimeter.
With his finely honed techniques and skillful eye, metalsmith KOBAYASHI crafts the phoenix engraving using nothing but a hammer and chisel, as only a true master craftsman can. Each individual bezel is painstakingly engraved by hand, no two alike, each truly one-of-a-kind.
The bezel, which serves as the surface for the engraving, is made of titanium. To achieve the rich, dark blue-green kurogane-iro hue that iron takes on when heated, a deep green DLC coating is applied to the titanium exterior. This traditional Japanese color, revered for its refined elegance, further enhances the commanding presence of the phoenix, so beautifully engraved by a master craftsman.

Adorned in the gorgeous colors of the auspicious phoenix

The phoenix — the legendary, mythological spirit animal depicted in traditional crafts and applied arts since ancient times — has long been revered as a symbol of good fortune, nobility, happiness, and longevity. The colorful MRG-B2000KT captures the brilliant plumage of this divine bird. The red-to-orange vapor-deposition gradation on the dial ring adds another gorgeous touch.
The four bezel screws are set with emeralds, a symbol of wisdom and the power to see the truth. These emerald green touches complement the deep blue-green kurogane-iro, creating an even deeper and more beautiful brilliance.

Uniquely striking pattern and color

The case is covered in a distinctive crystallized pattern that forms when heat is applied to pure titanium, reproducing the shimmering beauty of the crystalline nie patterns on a Japanese sword blade. Brown AIP coating also lends a coppery hue, evoking the material primarily used for Japanese sword mountings. Showcasing the MR-G commitment to meticulous detail, this timepiece embodies the marriage of iron and fire that gives form to the strength and beauty of Japanese swords. Finally, the case side is adorned at the 9 o’clock position with a metal plaque bearing the words “2025 LIMITED,” for a very special design worthy of a limited-edition timepiece.

* Exact patterns on the case will vary with each individual watch due to details of the manufacturing process.

AIP, a coating technology offering both meticulous reproduction of hues and superior hardness

AIP is a surface treatment technology that uses energy from arc discharges to vaporize metal materials instantaneously, turning them into a plasma state and ionizing the elements that form the coating. Compared to ordinary ion plating (IP), AIP enables the formation of films with greater adhesive properties and hardness. The most significant feature of AIP is its ability to vaporize materials in a flash, using intense energy to form uniform, beautiful coatings on a range of metal surfaces. The technology allows MR-G watches to deliver the unique Japanese hues the line is known for, and also supports a rich palette of color variations.

* AIP (arc ion plating) is a trademark of Kobe Steel, Ltd.

Ultra-precision machining forges exquisite dial design

This timepiece brings exceptionally detailed depth and dimension to traditional Japanese design. The dial features the arrow fletching pattern, a stylized symbol of a ceremonial arrow believed to ward off evil and ensure a prosperous future. Gently curved indexes with a fine grind-mark finish evoke the curvature of a sharp sword blade.
Components this detailed can only be produced with Yamagata Casio ultra-precision processing technology. Nano-level die molding is employed to create the fine details, including sharp edging and meticulous surface finish, worthy of MR-G timepieces.
