MRG-D5000 Blue Sapphire

Total MR-G refinement, now rendered in sapphire crystal — Introducing the limited-edition MRG-D5000 Blue Sapphire

Since its birth in 1996, MR‑G has consistently defied convention and pushed the limits of the possible. For three decades, an insatiable curiosity and an unyielding drive to create new moments of wonder have propelled MR‑G’s development — fueling technical innovation, uncompromising craftsmanship, and bold design.

This relentless pursuit of the extraordinary is distilled in the philosophy “Breaking Ground.” As MR‑G enters its third decade, that spirit remains the guiding force behind every creative effort, ensuring that the collection will continue to inspire and surprise watch enthusiasts around the world.

The revolution continues with the new limited-edition MRG-D5000, the first-ever MR-G timepiece crafted directly in sapphire crystal. The MRG-D5000 represents more than an astonishing upgrade in materials; it scales all-new heights in Japanese watchmaking, combining toughness and exquisite beauty in a remarkable way that only years of research and development could achieve.

This extraordinary timepiece features Multi-Guard Structure for Sapphire, which delivers the shock-resistant construction rendered in blue sapphire crystal. Only 20 of these limited-edition timepieces are available worldwide.

The MRG-D5000 Story:
How MR-G Keeps Defying the Impossible “Blue Rose Project”

MRG-D5000 sapphire case
It all began with the Dream Project, led by the father of G-SHOCK, Kikuo Ibe. In 2018, this project yielded the G-D5000. A one-of-a-kind timepiece unveiled, it was made of 18k gold — everything from the case to the bezel, bracelet, and screws — while still delivering premium shock-resistance thanks to a newly designed structure.

In the same year, the G-SHOCK team presented a concept watch made out of sapphire crystal in Basel, Switzerland. Not yet able to deliver G-SHOCK-level performance in shock resistance and other specs, the sapphire crystal prototype was not ready for production. After Ibe retired, however, the MR-G team inherited his spirit and legacy, and work on a sapphire crystal MR-G continued.

Through repeated experimentation and dedicated research into sapphire crystal cases, the MR‑G engineers discovered that dividing the outer case into multiple, interacting components — rather than relying on a single case — substantially improves impact resistance. Guided by this insight, the team developed the proprietary Multi‑Guard Structure, a refined assembly that disperses shock energy while maintaining the exacting standards for an MR-G finish. In 2022, this structure was delivered in titanium with the MRG‑B5000.

The team never let up in their effort to achieve a sapphire crystal shock-resistant structure. They named the effort the Blue Rose Project, in a nod to the quest to make the impossible possible, the original passion of the Dream Project. Now, in 2026, their dream has come true, in the MRG-D5000.

Blue sapphire crystal: Infinite resilience and beauty

The blue sapphire crystal begins as ingots produced over the course of several months. From these, only the sections with ideal color concentration and transparency are meticulously selected. This exacting process provides the material for a watch completed in exquisite blue hues.

Although sapphire crystal is extremely difficult to process into small components, the R&D team shaped the components to resist chipping and eliminated screw holes and other details that can cause cracking. The result almost defies description: a G-SHOCK tough timepiece made of a beautifully delicate material.

Specially crafted MRG-D5000 Multi-Guard Structure

The Multi-Guard Structure features a bezel and case formed from multiple separate components, instead of the conventional single piece, offering both the shock resistance and the beauty that MR-G stands for. For the new sapphire crystal outer case of the MRG-D5000, the Multi-Guard Structure has been reengineered specifically for the material, drawing inspiration from traditional Japanese timber-frame construction, which is known for the use of interlocking joints instead of screws or nails. Only design innovations like these could make it possible to achieve the signature toughness of MR-G in sapphire crystal.

Beautiful blue watch face with bold iconic brick pattern

The stainless-steel brick pattern adorning the face pays homage to the iconic motif inherited from the original G‑SHOCK and is finished with a lustrous blue vapor-deposition coating. The MR-G mark at the top, as well as the phrase SHOCK RESIST and other lettering, are all done in pure 24k gold, for a face design both bold and intricate. Radiating an elegance and beauty befitting MR-G, this timepiece exudes a truly one-of-a-kind presence.

Special Dura Soft rubber strap, new clasp design

The comfortable, extremely durable Dura Soft rubber strap features the same brick pattern with textured detailing. Developed specifically for this limited-edition timepiece, the raised pattern, each brick set at its own unique angle, creates a beautiful interplay between light and shadow, changing as the light moves to perfectly complement the sapphire crystal. The titanium clasp, also developed specifically for the MR-G line, delivers unparalleled comfort and features a release button engineered for a refined tactile response.

Only 20 pieces worldwide: Each screw case back engraved with proof of limited edition

Crafted from the grade-5 titanium alloy stronger and more scratch resistant than pure titanium, the screw case back is embedded with the same blue sapphire crystal. Each case back bears a unique number (from 1/20 to 20/20), marking its rarity and ensuring its place among the 20 pieces available worldwide. The case back also features the inscription “DREAM PROJECT” — honoring the special initiative originally led by Ibe. The “D” in MRG-D5000 also pays tribute to the Dream Project.
