Interview

When You Find Yourself Captivated
It Reveals Its True Artistic Value

After studying at a design school in Tokyo, T-ZUAN began his career in the field of silk screening. While he worked on largescale advertising projects, he felt a growing desire to create works that people could appreciate up close. This led him to pursue printmaking, a passion he had been developing since his teenage years. What drew him to the world of printmaking? This question marked the beginning of our interview.

――What motivated you to seriously pursue printmaking?

During my student years, I was deeply impacted when I first encountered Russian avant-garde posters from the 1910s to 1930s. Later, I discovered they were created using printmaking techniques, which surprised me greatly. The unique texture of paper and the subtle smudges of ink inherent to hand-carved prints fascinated me. I wanted to create pieces that were not large but rather hand-sized and intimate, which prompted me to fully commit to printmaking.

―― Your social media bio states, “There are shapes of unconditional beauty, without reason or purpose. The pursuit of these shapes defines my artistic practice.” Can you tell us more about the sources of inspiration for your work?

I believe I have had less desire than others involved in the arts to convey something or seek validation from an audience since my student days. Because of this, there was a period of nearly ten years where I didn’t show my work to anyone. My pieces don’t carry a message meant to communicate something specific. Instead, my inspirations come from a variety of motifs—from pure beauty in everyday life to elements that evoke a sense of discomfort. I find it rewarding to create these pieces not as paintings but as prints using rubber plates.

―― You created an artwork inspired by the “DW-5000R”, what sentiments or intentions guided your creation process?

G-SHOCK is a globally recognized brand that originates from Japan. Whenever I see someone wearing it while traveling abroad, it brings me unexpected joy. I wanted to incorporate a sense of pride for Japan into this piece, so I included positive geometric patterns representing light and the sun around the watch. Additionally, I used multiple layers in the printing process to ensure that the distinctive brick design and typography would align seamlessly. Given the intricate nature of printmaking, I focused even more on the details for this small wristwatch. I also expressed the G-SHOCK’s toughness through elements like a clenched fist.

In printmaking, there are three main processes: drawing, carving, and printing. Especially during the printing phase, it’s essential to concentrate and meticulously layer the ink. The “DW-5000R,” with its durability that allows for ink application without damaging the paper, proves to be an invaluable tool in the creation of these artworks.

After drawing the design for the “DW-5000R,” T-ZUAN divided it into 15 parts to create the print plates. This process reflects Japanese craftsmanship and his attention to detail.

―― I’ve heard you’ve been wearing G-SHOCK for many years. What aspects of it appeal to you?

I often wear my G-SHOCK while creating my artwork. Even if ink gets on it, it still looks great, and the watch’s urethane resin band prevents any damage to the paper when I stamp with my seals. With luxury watches, that can be a concern. I am drawn to how G-SHOCK serves both its practical function as a watch and enhances my ability to immerse myself in the creative process.

―― Can you tell us about your rules for selecting tools and materials for your artwork?

For carving, I primarily use a design cutter, and for larger surfaces, I often opt for a carving knife. I use TSUKINEKO’s VersaCraft ink, which has excellent transparency. Transparency is crucial during the layering process. Compared to other countries, Japanese brands offer a wide variety of inks and paper textures. Many international printmakers also choose to use Japanese brands. Japan is an ideal environment for creating prints. Additionally, I’m drawn to items like G-SHOCK that combine functionality with equal value in their visual appeal. Durability, along with its aesthetic quality, is a key factor in selecting products.

――What do you think keeps you so deeply immersed in art?

Art is the thing I enjoy the most. This year, I held a workshop for children for the first time, but I had no desire for them to inherit my style. I wanted them to see that art can be for themselves. I think it’s similar to playing the piano; before you show anything to others, you must first enjoy it yourself. It’s about doing it for your own sake, not anyone else’s. Printmaking involves three main processes: drawing, carving, and printing. The artwork comes together through these elements, but even if you become deeply engrossed in just one of those processes and find solace, that is valuable art. While I mentioned I have no specific message to convey through my work, I hope to share the joy of the creative process with many people.
